DIY, consulate or legal representative — which route?
There’s no single “best” route. Some readers can absolutely handle a Portuguese NIF themselves; others prefer support when there’s a property deadline, fiscal representation requirement or appointment bottleneck. Here’s a balanced comparison.
| What matters to you | Apply yourself (in Portugal or consulate) | Use a legal representative (E-Residence) |
|---|---|---|
| Need to be in Portugal? | Yes for in-Portugal route. No for consular route — but in-person at consulate. | No — fully remote via Power of Attorney |
| Forms in Portuguese | You complete them yourself | Handled for you, reviewed by lawyers |
| Fiscal representative requirement (non-EU NIF holders) | You must appoint one yourself | E-Residence acts as your fiscal representative |
| Language barrier | Portuguese skills helpful at Finanças/AT offices | Full English support throughout |
| Cost | Lower out-of-pocket (no service fee) | Service fee on top of any official fees |
| Refund if application refused | No refund — official fees are lost | 100% refund guarantee if your application is refused |
| Best for… | Applicants with time, language skills and access to the right office or consulate. | Applicants abroad, D7/D8 visa applicants, property buyers, anyone with a tight notary or bank deadline. |

Frequently asked questions
Can I get a Portuguese NIF without travelling to Portugal?
Yes. Applicants outside Portugal can either visit the relevant Portuguese Consulate, or use an authorised legal representative via a notarised Power of Attorney with Hague Apostille. E-Residence operates the second route end-to-end.
Does E-Residence actually issue the NIF?
No. E-Residence is a private legal and administrative assistance provider. The NIF is assigned by the competent Portuguese authority (Autoridade Tributária e Aduaneira). E-Residence prepares the documents, files the application, represents you on the ground via fiscal representation where applicable, and delivers the result once issued.
Do non-EU residents need a fiscal representative in Portugal?
Yes — non-EU residents holding a Portuguese NIF must appoint a Portuguese-resident fiscal representative. E-Residence can act as your fiscal representative, ensuring you receive any AT (tax authority) correspondence in time and stay compliant.
What does the PortugalGuru €10 discount apply to?
The promo code PORTUGALGURU (E-Residence’s partner-wide discount) gives you €10 off any E-Residence service at checkout — NIF, NISS, fiscal rep, bank account, NHR, IRS return, CRUE, Portuguese company, D8 visa, apostille, birth certificate or ready-made Madeira company. Just enter the code in the checkout form.
Is the NHR tax regime still available?
The traditional NHR closed to new entrants at the end of 2023, with a replacement regime (IFICI / NHR 2.0) introduced afterwards. Eligibility rules are different and stricter. E-Residence’s NHR-related service can advise on which regime (if any) applies to your case before you commit.
How long does the NIF process actually take?
For most applicants, the NIF is issued within 10–14 working days once all documents are ready. Final timing depends on the Autoridade Tributária e Aduaneira workload and cannot be guaranteed by any private provider.
Do I need a NIF to buy property or open a Portuguese bank account?
Yes — the NIF is required for property purchases, mortgage signings, utility contracts, long-term banking and tax payments in Portugal.
Is a NIF the same as residency?
No. The NIF is a tax identification number used in administrative, tax, property and banking procedures. It does not grant residence, a visa or work authorisation. Those are separate processes (D7, D8, Golden Visa, etc.) and E-Residence can help specifically with the D8 Digital Nomad Visa.
Are my documents safe?
E-Residence is a registered legal firm (License No. 62802L) and processes documents under GDPR. Identity verification uses a secure biometric step and your data is handled by their compliance team.
