About Portugalguru

Portugalguru.com is the trusted resource for Americans moving to Portugal. We help U.S. citizens — retirees, remote workers, digital nomads, and families — navigate Portuguese visas, taxes, healthcare, and everyday life abroad.

Why Portugalguru exists

Moving countries is one of the most complex decisions an American can make. Between D7 vs. D8 vs. Golden Visa, the IFICI tax regime (formerly NHR), FATCA banking rejections, FBAR reporting, and AIMA appointments, the amount of conflicting information online is overwhelming.

We built Portugalguru to cut through that noise. Every guide on this site is written with one audience in mind: the American considering Portugal, who wants clear, accurate, up-to-date information — not recycled marketing copy from immigration lawyers trying to sell services.

Who’s behind Portugalguru

Portugalguru was founded by Bruno Bianchi, the creator of Spainguru.es, the largest English-language resource for Americans moving to Spain (2,500+ articles, 17,000+ monthly readers). After years of helping Americans navigate Spanish residency, I realized the same information gap exists for every major expat destination — starting with Portugal.

Portugalguru is part of the Settleguru network, which also includes Settleguru.com (multi-country hub for Americans abroad) and Moveinmexico.com (deep dive on Mexico).

Our editorial standards

  • Sourced from primary Portuguese government sources — AIMA, Portal das Finanças, Consular Network, and the Portuguese Bar Association
  • Reviewed by licensed Portuguese immigration lawyers for visa and legal content
  • Updated at least twice a year as Portuguese immigration law changes
  • No sponsored content — if we recommend a service or product, it’s because we’ve vetted it
  • Transparent affiliate disclosure — some links in our articles are affiliate links, which help keep the site free. We never recommend services we wouldn’t use ourselves

What we don’t do

We’re not immigration lawyers. We don’t sell visa services directly. We don’t collect fees from readers. What we do is help you understand the landscape so you can make smart decisions and know which specialists to hire.
